How Do Spirits Experience Time?

by on Nov.17, 2010, under Paranormal & Ghosts Blog

A few days ago I received an email form one of my readers, named Rich. His email inspired me to write this blog article.  The following is a paragraph from his email to me.

I’ve always wanted to know how spirits experience time. Are they aware of time passing 24 hours a day? Seven days a week? Are they aware of the weeks, months and years since they died? Are Civil War soldiers aware that they’ve been walking around Gettysburg for over 140 years? If spirits are conscious of time passing the same as we are, it must be incredibly boring for the intelligent variety.

The short answer to all these questions is, no one knows. Sorry Rich, I know you were hoping for a more definitive answer than that. However, it is the only truthful answer I or any other person can give. Yet, in light of what we do know and/or theorize, I will try to give you some things to mull over in regard to your questions.

There are several theories based in science that indicate that those who have passed from this world, or those entities that exist that were never part of this world, do not have the same understanding or passage of time as we do. Many psychics and mediums also seem to indicate that time has no meaning to those on the “other side”.

It would stand to reason that due to being a free floating type energy there would be no constraints, and space-time, and distance would be irrelevant, and they would not experience the passage of time as we do.

Quantum theory not only specifies new rules for describing the universe, but also introduces new ways of thinking about matter and energy. The tiny particles that quantum theory describes do not have defined locations, speeds, and paths like objects described by classical physics. I would think that our development of classical physics which is derived from the nature of our universe and dimensional matter, the existence of time in this plane would only serve us, not them. So it is more than likely from this perspective, that time is basically a non existent form of calculation by the entities. Thus our free floating friends would have no use for “time”. Although they may not experience our time as we do, intelligent entities do seem to have a consciousness and often seem aware of our constraints by time.

Those who have died and pass onto to the light, whether you believe that to be heaven or simply another plane elsewhere, may be existing in a different dimension from our own. Since they are a free floating energy the constraints we experience with matter would not apply to them. Therefore they would be able to pass back and forth from their realm into ours and visa versa anytime they chose to. Although they are aware of our experiences with the passage of time, they would not experience time as we know it.

In a residual haunting that is due to an energy imprint or if it is energy trapped in this realm there is no consciousness. It is simply a form of energy that plays itself out like a looped video. Since there is no consciousness whatsoever there would be no awareness of time or any other matter or thing. If a residual haunting is due to a time slip or a cross over of dimensions, there is a consciousness. However, just like ourselves in this realm, that consciousness is based in their realm and space-time.

There is probably 3 different ways a time slip could occur; we notice them, but they do not notice us, they notice us, but we don’t notice them, and then there are the time slips in which we notice each other. Keeping this in mind, that although there is a consciousness by both involved, the awareness of time is subjective. The Gettysburg soldier who is preparing for battle may suddenly see me strolling across the now historic battlefield in the year 2010, and he hears me talking on my mobile cell phone. In his weary state he may rub his eyes thinking he has become delirious or may run in fright because he’s seen a strange in appearance ghost. That same civil war soldier may be at rest in his home when he looks up and sees me sitting in a chair in his home. Putting his fear to the side he may ask me, “who are you, where are you from?” I may not answer because this time slip is only one sided, and I am unaware him and of his time dimension. If it is a mutual, but partial time slip, he may see and hear me, but I may only hear him. If he were to ask me what year is it I would answer 2010, but I would more than likely be unable to answer him as to what year he is living because I simply wouldn’t know.

So although no one knows for sure yet how space and time is experienced by the other side, science and parapsychologist do indicate that time is not experienced by the other siders in the same way that we experience it. So the next time you come across a ghost from years past or future, just flash them a smile and ask them yourself.….you may just get an answer.

Paranormal Governing Body of Experts – Poll Results

by on Nov.16, 2010, under Paranormal & Ghosts Blog

I posted a poll on a few sites asking, Should there be one governing body of experts overseeing paranormal investigators and researchers? I left the question open to interpretation to see what responses I would get. Below is what the results:

No Vote

100%

Here are some of the responses in whole or part.

This is not an exact science in a controlled environment. There are many different methods that can be used to achieve end results. Everybody interrupts data in different ways. No one is certified. There is no unity. There can not be one governing body. People can still come together, express opinions, and agree or disagree. This is a form of anarchy that works as it is. You have good groups, bad groups, and mediocre groups. The strength of the group is what helps it survive. Groups are like packs of animals in the wild. Each similarly the same yet each totally different. Putting one governing body over everybody would be detrimental to each group and to this field. That is just the cold hard facts. There will never be total unity and there can never be one governing body.

__________

We are getting into the realm of certifications. This is too much of a can f worms. There is too much descent now over what is considered paranormal, and we all know there are no experts in this field. It just won’t work!

__________

You mean like the US government does in overseeing its citizens? …ah…NO.

 __________

I don’t think there should be an oversight, but I don’t see anything wrong with an association of members so to speak for collaboration of evidence and techniques. Uniformity is key to success, but until there are serious studies being done it is a fragmented society of paranormal investigations using there own methods whether they work or not.

__________

And who determines the experts? I wouldn’t trust anyone on TV to be an expert.

 __________

To have one governing body of experts is impossible as research and investigations are always changing. Teams have different techniques that works for them other teams believe a certain piece of equipment works better than any other. We’re all supposed to be seeking the truth or at least some possible answers to “Why are you still here?”

__________

One governing body would take away our freedom to run our teams how we want to and would violate client confidntiality. I do not want to be told how I should run an investigation.  NO!

Collective Database for Paranormal Evidence – Poll results

by on Nov.15, 2010, under Paranormal & Ghosts Blog

Recently I posted a poll on a few sites and asked: Should there be one all inclusive collective database in which all captured paranormal evidence can be submitted, stored, and accessed by registered users?

I left the question rather open ended as to the specifics to see what the comments would be. I received very mixed responses to this question. Some responses were thoughtful, some …not so much. After the votes were averaged this is what they were:

 47%    Yes

40 %    No

13%     Not Sure

Rather than me try to interrupt what these responses mean in terms of the future wave of the paranormal community, I will post some of the responses, either in whole or part.

 YES Votes

If submissions are strictly voluntary, why not?

I would like to see a centralized location where serious minded investigators/researchers can have serious peer reviewed evidence deposited in a categorized manner.

I think it IS a good idea, I think. I’m wondering if you could draw upon examples from similar sites that collate scientific research in a certain area of study

I don’t see why there shouldn’t be one. I say go for it.

It would give us all a more precise overview of what IS all going on. What type of paranormal activity is most prominent? It may help us develop more specific and better equipment. We may also find more identifiable patterns and make the capture of evidence less random.

Sounds like a good idea – I envision a constantly evolving Wiki-type site.

No Votes

The paranormal community is EXTREMELY fragmented. Who get to decide what “serious” evidence is? Since the poll doesn’t specify what quality of evidence would be stored I can’t imagine it working.

That would violate client confidentiality

I voted no because as investigators we are doing scientific research along with helping our clients out. When we are helping clients we are performing a public service. I do like the idea of a huge database, but it should be allowed to be accessed by the public as part of our public service, unless the accessed by registered means it is able to be accessed by the user just to put it up evidence. One other problem with the database is that if it is going to be governed or not. It is a very good idea to have a huge database but it has the potential to have its problems which also makes it a bad idea.

(NOTE by ME – Although this was a no vote, it sounds more like an “I’m not Sure” vote doesn’t it?)

I could see this turning into a giant pissing contest. Not to mention the Bozo factor…I don’t need my evidence criticized by people I know nothing about. I’m already critical enough of myself. Or maybe I’m just crabby today….;)

Not Sure

I voted not sure. The reasoning is because while it would be sweet to actually have thousands of people look at different things from everybody. It would seriously end up being one big bi#ch fest. Somebody would say it is this, the other would say it is that. Then you have complaining. A lot of people can’t take criticism at all. Also, if there were such a thing, there would have to be a way to upload the full investigation. So they can actually see/hear everything that went on just as the person uploading it did. That would blow out the excuse, “I wasn’t there so I can’t tell”. This way they can actually base their decision on the evidence review, and not just a few minute clip.

EVP #5 – Does anyone recognize this EVP as ….

by on Nov.11, 2010, under Paranormal & Ghosts Blog

Does anyone recognize this male voice as possibly saying something in another language? This EVP sounds like something one might hear from a Star Wars movie bar scene. I’m not sure if it is just a slur or a slurred attempt at saying something in another language that I can’t identify. PLEASE take a listen and if you recognize it as an attempt at speaking something in another language, let me know. Your help is much appreciated

Space-Time Continuum

by on Nov.02, 2010, under Paranormal & Ghosts Blog

I started this past Friday to write this blog article about multiple dimensions and Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and the space-time continuum. However, last night I watched the Ghost Hunters Live show recorded on my DVR. Interestingly enough, and for the first time ever, I heard the mention of time slips on the show. They never elaborated much on it beyond mentioning it a few times, but this blog article however will elaborate, because the theory of “time slips” as they referred to it can only occur if multiple dimensions exists within the Time-Space Continuum. Time slips or as I like to refer to it as, colliding dimensions, cause a conflict within the time space continuum. These “collisions” in essence cause “time slips” and could allow us to see or experience things outside of the norm, in other words, into the paranormal. So allow me to start with a little background information and scientific jargon.

The first thing to note is that as humans in this vast universe our perceptions are quite limited. Within the time-space continuum, we as humans are aware of and experience 4 dimensions, the fourth being the concept that space-time combines space and time within a single coordinate system, typically with three spatial dimensions: length, width, height, and one temporal dimension: time. There also are several proposed space-time theories that include additional dimensions. How many dimensions are needed to describe the universe is still an open question that no one knows the answer to yet. However, let’s briefly explore a couple of these theories now.

In string theory, elementary particles are not point-like, but instead are more like or similar to strings. In this speculative theory it is predicted that there may be 10 or 26 dimensions. There are various forms of string theory and each requires the existence of at least six extra spatial dimensions.

Brane theory is a short for “membrane” and is also sometimes referred to as the M-Theory, and would be viewed as a sheet floating in a fifth dimension. The M-theory predicts 11 dimensions: 10 spatial and 1 temporal.

One excepted theory is that these “other dimensions’ beyond what we consciously know now, are copies, but not exact replicas of our own world, our own self. I find this theory particularly interesting and plausible. However, I believe the theory that the “other dimensions” are really not different worlds or copies of our own, but spatial and that “time” as we know it is playing itself out in these other dimensions. Allow me to explain.  One possibility is that time does not run linear, but may co-exists side by side as in other dimensions. In other words, our awareness of time as humans within our own space is usually not affected by these other time dimensions, but if a clash of dimensions were to occur, then we could be witness to time slips.

In our minds we pass the years one by one, one after another, moving forward; year 1999, year 2000, and so on. You might compare the passing of time like our use of linear measurements. It’s kind of like taking measurements of an object or space with a ruler. You start at the beginning and calculate 1 inch at a time and as you move up the ruler in a linear fashion in specific spatial increments… 2 inches, 3 inches, and so on. So let’s use a ruler to represent the passing of time. It will really help if you try to see an actual ruler in your head as I move forth with this explanation.

Picture a ruler in your head, and each inch on the ruler represents a year; inch number 1 /year 1. In this view, time would start at the beginning in year 1 and move forward one at a time until we reach the end of our existence at year 12 (I know only 12, but just stay with me on this). This ruler represents space-time running linear, in a straight forward sequential motion. We move forward through each inch which represents each year one at a time, remembering our experiences of what has passed as we go. We are aware that more years lie ahead of us, but we have not experienced it yet, thus there is no conscious comprehension of its space. We assume in our conscious, known world we cannot move backwards to what has passed, nor are we able to jump ahead, and that we can only move forward in specific spatial increments.

Okay, I know this may be getting confusing…please stay with me on this as it gets easier and does make sense.

What if space-time does not run in a forward linear motion only as described above, but coexists in a different way that is normally inaccessible to us? What if space-time coexists side by side…think of a horse track and race. At the starting gates all the horses are lined up next to each other, side by side. When the race begins all the gates open at the same time and the horses take off into their designated lanes which are only separated by a visually thin line. As the race continues you will notice that often the horses cross over into other lanes other than their own which were originally designated for them. When a crossing like this occurs the horses risk bumping into each other, and occasionally the horses do bump together.

The gates represent the beginning of time as we know it and exist side by side, and as the race begins all gates open simultaneously. Each lane represents a dimension, and each dimension represents a year, and each has its own lane that is only separated by a visually thin line that can easily be crossed.

This example is a rudimental analogy of time playing itself out in other (side by side) dimension to our own. It is time (other years past or future) existing in a different “realm” or dimension.  And if a dimensional clash occurs, or a tear or portal exists or is accidentally created between dimensions, a time slip may occur. Meaning, we could bump into other living people, etc., and they into us, literally, or figurative and we become witness to oddities we can’t explain. The “other side” is really the same world we live in, but it is just a different year/time than currently in our own realm. …or as described above, like a crossing over into another lane other than our own and visa versa. Now mind you I’m not a scientist, but this is my understanding (in the simplest of terms) of what a time slip is.

When it is said that “time is relative”, in its simplest terms, it means time is a perspective. And that perspective usually is thought of in our mind’s perspective, in this tangibly viewed world of ours.

In the paranormal field we suspect that some of the intelligent “other worlders” or “other siders” we come across may be due to a crossing over of time dimensions or a colliding of dimensions, or as mentioned on GH, a time slip. It is possible that they are not “dead”, but very much alive and living their lives out in a normal timely fashion, just like us, but in their own time dimension. And when we come across them with startled eyes and/or ears, because we think they are ghosts, they too are startled by us, and may think we are ghosts.

It is even possible while we think of them as ghost of a time passed, and they may view us like we are aliens from the future. So as ridiculous as it sounds, as of now this all remain a possibility, and no one knows for sure, and we are just limited by current scientific understanding. However, our limited perspectives according to what we know now should not preclude other possibilities.

With all that has been said, additional dimensions to the ones we’ve come to love and know as our reality may also lend itself to other types of ghostly sightings, including residual. What if in residual sightings or the like, there is a tear or ripple in the fabric of time which is made up of energy. It may be possible that this film loop of  we see and understand now as residual energy isn’t really a residual imprinted energy, but just a glimpse though a specific portal in time…into another dimension.  It would be kind of like looking at something through a tiny hole or tear. It is impossible to see everything going on all around everywhere and we’d only see a bit or portion. If the tear remains open to that specific point in time, it would only be a snapshot of time, like looking a photograph or video clip of a moment in time. And although this is all that we see, the fact may be that life is moving along in a full and complete fashion on the other side of this small tear, but we just can’t see it.

So at this point in the article you are yelling, “But Mary, what about intelligent interactions with those that we know are dead? What about the belief in heaven?”

My answer to you is this: As a Christian, I believe in the existence of heaven, and since no one in this realm can definitively and with proof tell me otherwise, I believe that heaven most definitely exists.  It may simply exist in another dimension, and who’s to say that God isn’t the conductor orchestrating all existence?

In conclusion, the discovery of, and definitive proof of multiple dimensions, as suspected and theorized by the scientific community may be the key to unlocking the answers to explanations we currently seek in the paranormal community and in general as humans.
